5 Rules to follow for an Energy Balanced Diet
Every week a number of people email me "Which foods can I eat to have more energy?" and so
on. My reply is always, "Eat that which is traditional to your ethnicity, or the food you ate in your childhood.
This is because eating food that is familiar to us, is not only easily digestible, its nutrition easily absorbed by
our body, but also makes our body feel secure - which is very important if our bodies have to manage energy
properly. Our bodies go into stress-mode when our diet isn't suiting it, and this means all manner of stress
related illnesses. When it feels secure, and is in contact with familiar basic foods like fresh bread and milk, it
begins to get back to normal energy patterns."
There is also the matter of basic emotional reaction. When we have favorable emotional reactions to food - we
like what we see, or like the color of the food, our energy fields relax and all our digestive organs get ready to
absorb the nutrition from that food - the first indication of which is mouth-watering. When we do not react
favorably to the food, our digestive organs clench in and our body gets ready to reject or block the passage of
this particular food. No matter how nutritious it is, the body is going to resist it.
This is why the first thing to do in cases of IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and any eating disorder or comfort/
over eating situation is to understand your emotional reaction to the food. If you like it, if your mouth waters
in agreement, eat it. If not, improvise or choose something else to eat. If we follow our emotions as a guide, we
will not only enjoy the act of eating, but also absorb nutrition from whatever little we are eating for it.
5 Rules to follow for an Energy Balanced diet;
1) If you don't feel good or atleast normal, looking at your food, don't eat it. Improvise it or go face what's
troubling you, work it out, feel better and then come back. This one thing can pretty much take care of any diet
related problem in the long run.
2) Have a balance of all the three types of foods:
The three types of food (from an energy management point of view ) are;
1) Fresh - pure energizing or 'Sattvic' food. These are most fresh vegetables, fruits and cereals. They give you
energy immediately.
2) Stimulating or 'awakening' foods, also called 'Rajasic' food. These foods stimulate the body's organs into
converting energy from stored energy to usable energy, thus awakening the body from within. These include
Coffee, Ginger, Garlic and many herbs. If we have too much of them our body gets over stimulated and tired.
In balance they are great aids to fight infection, resist extreme temperature and so on.
3) Storage, Retentive, or 'Tamasic' foods. These foods aid our ability to simply store energy for later. Storing
energy is an important part of our life process and energy balance even though in the short term it feels like
these foods make us sluggish or slow. Foods that help us store energy are various nuts, oils, dairy products,
and most protein enriched foods like lentils.
Depending on what you need, have a little of either or all of the above types of food in balance. While Sattvic
or immediately energizing food and Rajasic or food that is stimulating from within can be had whenever
needed, Tamasic or energy storage food works best when had in little quantities regularly over a period of
time.
Note: My classification of foods is different from the traditional Ayurvedic classification where all meats are classified as Tamasic and natural foods Sattvic or Rajasic. In energy field speak, meats and fish do not classify as being able to really affect an energy field in any specific way because as soon as their living cells break down - when they die ie; their energy field breaks down. When we have them, we are eating truncated or dissipating energy fields. Their effect on our system is more to do with the actual chemicals/proteins/oils they are made of, and how our body manages those physical substances than whatever energy they might or might not have.
3) In every meal, have something familiar as a base, something you trust.
If you don't have anything familiar on your plate, look at it, make friends with your food before putting it in
your mouth. This will help absorb any other foods and keep the body feeling secure.
4) Never eat food cooked by someone you don't trust - whether that's a person or a restaurant. Forcing yourself
to eat something inspite of not trusting it or its source, is energy field abuse. You will feel hungry inspite of
filling up your stomach and that can lead to all kinds of weight and nutrition imbalances.
5) Never argue or get mentally worked up, over a meal. Keep challenging judgements and discussions and
talks for other times and places. When its time to eat, its time to come back to nature. What's important now is
to honor the life in our body and the food which is right in front of us.
The emotion we have while eating the
food, it is what the food will remind us of in a subtle way for as long as it is in our bodies. Let that emotion be gratefulness or
appreciation, or peace. Love - if we eat with love - that would be just amazing. We wouldn't ever fall ill really.
