Thyroid Imbalance of any type is an endocrine system disorder. There are two small glands in our throat area called 'Thyroid' glands. These secrete a hormone called 'Thyroxine' into our blood. The blood carries this hormone through the body to various cells which use this hormone to absorb oxygen.

When there are low levels of this hormone in the blood, cells burn oxygen slower which means we have a slower 'metabolism' - which means our body is working sluggishly, making us retain more fat for egg. When there is more Thyroxine in the blood, cells burn up oxygen faster and our body works faster. This means we digest food faster and feel more active and energized in general.

'Hyper-thyroidism' is a condition where there is more of the Thyroid hormone than is required. The cells of our body are forced to work faster and faster. Energy is used up in huge quantities, the nervous system is stressed, the muscles waste as they give up their share of energy, and depression sets in because of the endocrine disorder in the brain caused by this imbalance. The thyroid glands themselves get bigger and bigger to cope with the task of producing the hormone - this swelling in the throat area is called a 'goitre'.

'Hypo-thyroidism' is the opposite condition and takes a longer time to evolve. The cells work slower and slower, making digestion slow, the nervous system less active, fat is held back rather than burned up, and the entire body is sluggish and low on energy.

Modern medicine is only capable of forcing the thyroid back into normal function by constantly artificially controlling thyroxine levels. The day the artificial treatment stops the condition is back with a bang.
